In January 2025, a minister stood at a microphone and called Loughton the largest sovereign AI data centre in the United Kingdom. The site was being used to store scaffolding. Whether he knew this is beside the point. Incompetence and lies produce the same press release. It doesn’t get any better from here.

The company that was supposed to own the site didn’t own it. Eight months later they bought it. Planning permission is still missing. The opening shifted from late 2026 to somewhere in 2027. Nobody has been held accountable, because accountability isn’t part of the model. Announcements generate shareholder value, diplomatic goodwill and ministerial photo opportunities. The bill arrives once the people who made the announcements have moved on. Nscale shares that were issued for a penny are now worth 350, 000 percent more on paper. The scaffolding is still there. Lovely system, really.

The chip procurement works the same way, just with numbers larger than your mortgage will ever be. Nvidia releases a new generation every year. Building a data centre takes two to four years. By the time it opens, the hardware being installed is already one or two generations behind. The loans are secured against chips valued at purchase price, while the market value drops the moment the next generation arrives. The banks know this. They lend anyway. The profit is at the beginning. The pain is at the end. The end is, by definition, someone else’s quarter.

A former deputy prime minister described the United Kingdom as a state of technological dependency six months before taking a board seat at Nscale. He framed it as analysis. Then he signed his contract with the company delivering that dependency. The diagnosis was accurate. It just made the position more attractive.
